Crushing It! by Gary Vaynerchuk | lindsay-elizabeth.com

I’ve been looking forward to reading this book ever since Gary Vee announced it. I’m a huge fan of his, and I loved the book’s predecessor, Crush It!, and his book on online marketing, Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook. His newest release, Crushing It!, not only fired me up, but also dropped a lot of valuable truth bombs, information, strategies, and insights into building a sustainable business online.

Here’s a piece from the introduction of Crushing It!:

“You’re going to hear stories of people who were scared, just like you. Who had obligations, just like you. Who were told they were being foolish, or reckless, or irresponsible, or immature. They did it anyway and reaped the rewards. If there’s anything this book should teach you, it’s that the only thing stopping you from achieving lasting career and life happiness is you.” – Gary Vaynerchuk

Gary has a special gift for cutting right through the bullshit and getting straight to what matters. He rips out the guts of fear, doubt, and negativity and serves as the powerful voice of truth that most of us have in the back of our minds but choose to ignore most of the time in favor of the voices of fear and others around us. Beyond that, he offers the wisdom of someone who has actually achieved all of the things he’s encouraging other people to do. I have massive respect for this guy. Some people are turned off by his loud, aggressive delivery and wrongly assume that makes him arrogant and full of shit, but when you actually take the time to listen to him, you’ll realize all of that fervor comes from his genuine desire to help people go after the happiness they deserve. It’s all fueled by his compassion.

Let’s be clear ─ this isn’t a “get rich quick online” manual. It’s for people who are in it for the long haul. People who want to improve their lives and the lives of others through their business, even if they aren’t sure what that business should be yet, or assume they couldn’t make money from what they love (you can, even if it’s around something obscure, like your love for the Smurfs).

Most of all, though, this book drives home the importance of enjoying the journey.

While there’s absolutely no shame in wanting to make money ─ he offers plenty of tips and strategies on how to maximize your profitability ─ your bank account is secondary to genuinely enjoying the process (which amounts to your daily life) and providing value to people.

Gary’s message is backed by a handful of entrepreneurs who share their stories in the book after being inspired by his first book, Crush It! They range from a local dentist who found creative ways with social media to draw in new patients, to bloggers who built communities around their interests, and even a few who discovered completely unexpected paths after being on a different trajectory for years. Their backgrounds are as varied as their businesses, but the running theme is this: if you have the will, the drive, the patience, and the talent, you can create a life for yourself that makes you excited to get up every day.

Here’s a taste of the insight they bring to the book:

“I was passionate about making money, and that’s what held me back for so long. I wanted to make money so bad that all I cared about what making money, like most of these dudes who are trying to start businesses. And when you’re always focused on the money, you don’t really think about what you could do better for your customers. When I shifted that focus and started caring about the customer in front of me, things started happening.” – Andy Frisella, The MFCEO Project

“My advocacy and my message are about the power of transformation. It’s about owning your story. It’s about the courage to be vulnerable. It’s about the innate capacity that we all have to not only change but to tap into reservoirs of potential that are lying dormant. And it’s about performance.” – Rich Roll, Rich Roll Enterprises, LLC

“The message from Crush It! was, no matter where you are, who you are, color of your skin, where you’re from, size, shape, and all that good stuff, if you really feel like you’re good at something, if you put in the work, I guarantee you, you will get somewhere. You know, it’s hard to get your mind around it when you have no experience with that, but I kinda just took it and ran with it.” – Timothy Roman, Imperial Kitchen & Bath

Not only do Gary and these entrepreneurs bring the excitement and passion (as well as the struggles) of entrepreneurship alive through the pages, but they all make it clear just how POSSIBLE and REAL and ATTAINABLE a life like that is. This book flips the idea of “pipe dreams” on its head, of what is “realistic” and “practical” and proves that the internet makes all of our wildest dreams practical. It just hasn’t sunk into society’s psyche yet because it’s still such a new reality. We’re so unbelievably fortunate to be living in this time.

The concept of living any other way starts to sound like the crazy, risky choice rather than the other away around. Which is the way it should be. The way that it is.

“An entrepreneur is someone who finds a way.” – Shaun “Shonduras” McBride
